Locked-in Syndrome

Individuals with locked-in syndrome are physically almost completely paralysed, conscious and awake but with no ability to speak or produce any voluntary movement outside of the eyes. Locked-in syndrome usually does not affect cognitive function.

What is locked-in syndrome?

Locked-in syndrome can be caused by a complication of a stroke, traumatic brain injury, diseases of the circulatory system or a medication overdose.

How can we help?

We take good care to make sure each of our clients gets the kind of care that works for them and their conditions. Our expert team of nurses evaluate every client’s clinical and social requirements to develop a bespoke, comprehensive care and lifestyle plan. This will give our clients the greatest opportunity to have a normal life whilst facing the challenges of their conditions.

Our personal care assistants and nurses are trained in a wide range of skills to support locked-in clients, including skin care, bladder and bowel care, nasogastric and PEG feeding, tracheostomy and ventilator management.

We also collaborate with our clients and specialist support as appropriate, eg. physiotherapists and speech therapists, to develop exercise regimes that maintain muscle tone and implement communication tools. Our aim is to support a service which enables the progression of a normal life for our clients.

Our approach to care goes beyond maintaining physical health needs, including a focus on wellbeing. Research has shown that enhancing the condition of life for people with locked-in syndrome is strongly linked to their social setting.

We look for innovative ways to support clients with locked-in syndrome to enjoy interaction with their family and friends and continue to enjoy their favourite activities. We work closely with our clients to enable them to develop and maximise their abilities – including through the use of assistive technologies – and support them in taking control of their lives.

Taking an initiative-taking, positive, and problem-solving approach to providing for our clients is key to the way we work; developing bespoke care, tailored to the individual needs and conditions of our clients. If you need further support please give us a call and speak with a member of our clinical team.
